From the Longbox – Wildcats v3.0 #4

October 4th, 2009

Let’s say you’ve got a nearly unstoppable, but sorta dumb, super powered FBI agent. Where do you keep him? Why, with a cover family of other FBI agents in suburbia of course. Meet the youngest daughter of the “Nuclear Family”. She’s a pistol, mmm-hmm. Also pictured here is her Mom. This whole family is not to be trifled with.

Wildcats Version 3.0 might be my all time favorite run of the series. Gone are the daemonites and interplanetary secret wars. In this series Jacob Marlowe uses his Halo corporation to save the world through responsible corporate policy and branding. Oh, and batteries that never die, ever. It was an ingenious take on the characters even though it devolves into the same old Coda war BS by the time the series wraps.

Joe Casey wrote the entire run and for the most part does a great job. Dustin Nguyen handles the pencil for most of the run. Nguyen has moments of absolute greatness, some of which I’ve included below, but he can also miss the mark entirely. He seems to swing back and forth between flowing beauty and an almost scribbled haste.

However the first dozen issues or so are just great. Getting back to the unstoppable FBI agent and his handler family, the father and son show up an issue later to rescue mommy and daughter:

This is, of course, the unstoppable Agent Orange (what a great name):

And finally this is the cover to Wildcats Version 3.0 #10. I think it’s a great homage to Grifter, an often mishandled but always awesome character:
