Week of 9/2/2009 – Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #2
September 2nd, 2009
Ok, this is a dream sequence. As one of the handful of Ultimate characters to survive The Ultimatum Wave, Spider-Man is still having nightmares about the event 6 months later. Even if things in his life are otherwise going pretty sweet. Hot girlfriend? Check. Adored by media and the law? Check. Flexible class schedule that allows for crime fighting during study hall? Check.
As the only person in the world who didn’t LOVE Mark Bagley I’m thrilled that Marvel went with Dave Lafuente to handle the art duties for Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. It does have that manga flavor which I usually stay away from but this is about a high school kid with super powers. The style fits well. It’s dynamic without being too childish or falling into the visual traps of huge manga eyes or giant sweat tear drops. Although Spidey’s head has become very round.
David Lafeunte doesn’t have a very big catalog but you could check out the Hellcat series he did recently (with covers by another Ultimate Spidey artist, Stuart Immomen).
* It would appear that Patsy Walker: Hellcat is only mildly available from Amazon.
