From the Longbox – The Magdalena
November 29th, 2009
Right near the sunset of all the terrible trends of 90’s comics The Magdalena was published. Put out by Top Cow comics the guys behind the T&A holy trinity. Witchblade, Lara Croft, and then The Magdalena. In this three part series Sister Rosalia here faces off against the Vampiri. All this nearly a decade before Twilight, Tru Blood, and the Diaries made fangs super-fashionable. But when Rosy discovers that Vamps ain’t that bad she defends her new blood-sucking friends from Inquisitor special ops.
The Magdalena is a hereditary position in the Catholic church. The descendants of Mary Magdalene, all women, are trained in fighting the dark hordes of evil. In addition to having the power to show a person his sins and instantly repent these women wield the Spear of Destiny. Yeah. That one. It can come off a bit Buffy at times but as mentioned, there are still some very 90’s trends happening here.
The man behind the pencil here is Joe Benitez. You may recognize the name from his recent work on Wraithborn. I never caught that series because frankly, it reminded me a bit too much of things like Fathom. And Witchblade. And Magdalena. As beautiful as some of these books are they are rarely good reads.
Here are some more shots from The Magdalena 1-3. (A note about the boys in masks, those are soldiers of the Inquisition. Inquisitors, straight up. That’s kind of cool.)
