From the Longbox – Secret War #3
September 20th, 2009
Marvel’s Ultimate Alliance 2 dropped this week and the opening levels of the game rehash the events of 2004’s Secret War series. In this Secret War Nick Fury takes a covert team of super heroes to Latveria to take down a government that was sponsoring terrorist activity in the states. The secret bit was that Fury did it without the sanction of the US government. Things go poorly. Even after fury issues them all ‘covert’ uniforms that were super badass. The whole series was painted by the very talented Gabrielle Dell’Otto.
In this panel Dell’Otto depicts the covert team fighting scads of high tech warriors outfitted by the Tinkerer. The full team included Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine, Daredevil, Luke Cage, the Black Widow, and new-comer Daisy Johnson. It’s all brainwashing and lies and secrets and absolutely mint Nick Fury. In the end, Fury must go into hiding and is replaced by Maria Hill as the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Many of the events in Secret War lead directly into the not too well received Secret Invasion series. The art though, good Christmas! Pick up this series just to see the individual covers. Every single one should be hanging on your wall even if you’re not a True Believer.
Regrettably the Secret War trade paperback is sold out in Amazon.
