From the Longbox – Reaper

December 15th, 2009

Sometimes I just want to see some ninjas doing some cool ninja shit. I’m sorry. I don’t always want deep character development or decompressed story lines. Or ‘events’. I just want to see a guy chop another guys arm off with a katana. I’m easy.

Reaper is a stand alone graphic novel that tells the tale of a mercenary hired to kill an immortal man. The book seems to be custom made to show the considerable talents of artist Cliff Rathburn. Rathburn excels at drawing dismembered bodies. The loose story serves only to setup a series of encounters where the protagonist can draw his sword and turn opponents into scattered piles of parts.

It’s a nice stand alone story that features some interesting characters. The characters that I assume are the spirits of life and death also play strongly to Rathburn. Life being a beautiful woman who frequently suffers from nip slip and Death being a rotting corpse. It’s overly simplified but dammit, it looks cool. And yes I support nip slip.

If you check out Cliff’s blog you’ll see some preview pages from Reaper 2. No release date that I know of yet. I will be buying it.
