Week of 9/23/09 – Old Man Logan #1
September 24th, 2009
At this point “Old Man” Logan has got to be what, 200 years old? And he’s still pretty ripped. Of course, if you returned from a cross country trip to save your family only to find them all murdered you might be pretty fired up too. Here a grey-bearded Wolverine is dicing up the Hulk Gang. That’s right, in the future Bruce has a bunch of babies with his first cousin, She-Hulk. I just don’t buy that, c’mon she was a lawyer for Pete’s sake!
In this version of the future Marvel Universe the villains have banded together and killed all the super heroes. Wolverine has survived but he hasn’t popped his claws in 50 years. For most of the series we don’t see a single ’snikt’. It made for some great (if predictable) tension.
The Old Man Logan story arc was hyped. By just about everyone. Then it was delayed. And delayed again. The whole story started back in the summer of 2008 with Wolvie 66. Well over a year later we get a conclusion in a one-shot. The story was written by Mark Millar, the man behind the unstoppable Ultimates vol. 1 and 2. The art was done by Steve McNiven, whom I absolutely love.
If you like McNiven you could always pick up Civil War if you haven’t already but I would recommend Marvel Knights Fantastic Four. McNiven was involved in the first 7 issues and they are very good. I especially love the way he draws The Thing, huge and menacing. No disrespect to Chiklis but Mr. Grimm is supposed to be a monster.
