From the Longbox – Mouse Guard Fall 1152

What do you do when God taps you to live the life of one of the tiniest mammals on Earth? Well you burrow underground and into trees. You stay out of sight of the biggest baddies. And you train an elite group of your fellow mice to be tiny little fury Jedi’s. Enter the Guard Mice.

In 2006 comic shops all over were confronted with Mouse Guard. The oddly shaped (8″x8″) book was celebrated right away, as was it’s writer and artist, David Peterson. Set in the medieval time period the books tell the tale of hidden mouse cities in a world where humans don’t exist. Peterson is an excellent world-crafter. The reader is immediately immersed in the land of these woodland creatures and the dangerous predators they face off against.

The dialogue is sparse as he lets his panels do the talking for him. And those panels are gorgeous. The series has done so well that it has actually spawned a tabletop roleplaying game, based on the universe. A game that I am very intrigued by.

In the very first issue of the series a very green Gaurdmouse takes on rattlesnake. His, are brass.

Later on a very old, peg-legged, Guardmouse confronts some massive crabs.

In the series’ final chapter an old legend among the mice returns to claim his weapon and title, The Black Axe.
