Week of 10/7/09 – Haunt #1

October 8th, 2009

Filthy, fallen, Catholic priest? Standard-issue, generic, black-ops guy? Two great tastes that taste great together. When said black-ops guy is killed in action his ghost haunts his priest brother. When his priest brother finds himself in trouble black-ops guy possesses him and turns him into Haunt the vaugely Venom-ish super… thing.

Haunt is, of course, the love child of superstar writer Robert Kirkman and mega-superstar artist and writer Todd McFarlane. For those who haven’t heard this story yet, Kirkman called out McFarlane at a panel back in 2006 for not making comics anymore. Three years later Haunt was finally released.

For the McFarlane fans out there it’s worth noting that he is only doing covers and the inks on interior pages. Interior pencils are done by Ryan Ottley, who is most well known for breathing life into Invincible. As I finished the book I realized that it was Ottley’s personality that struck me the most even with the unfamiliarity of McFarlanes inks dressing it up.

I made a crack about this at the beginning of the post but Haunt is very reminiscent of Venom and as a result of that, Spidey. It’s a guy in black and white who has web-like things shooting out of him and clawed hands. I mean look at this shot here. Leaping and lopping off heads? Total Venom!

Haunt #1 - Heads, you lose.

And let’s be honest, this priest must have fallen very, very far from the seminary if he seems to be ok with decapitating a couple of guys. Of course I’d probably be happy I wasn’t technically crazy either. Toss up.

Haunt #1 - Crazy? Me? C'mon.
