Week of 12/9/09 – Deathlok #2

December 12th, 2009

In the future things suck. Dystopian I suppose. War has become televised and the quintessential professional athlete has been replaced by charismatic mercenaries. The Roxxon corporation owns an army which it uses to settle border disputes and oil ownership squabbles. When two of Roxxon’s most valuable soldiers get blowed up the corporation finds itself in a jam. Solution? Cobble the working bits from both men into a super cyborg warrior dubbed Deathlok the Demolisher!

When I was growing up my brother was more into Deathlok than I ever was. The character by himself isn’t all that interesting. However, this new setting is. I keep thinking of The Running Man. Not sure if that’s a good thing. Then there’s the element of the warring personalities of the two soldiers involved. It’s all very odd couple. One’s a show boat the other is a reserved tactician.

I’m not really picking up a Deathlok title, especially one on the Marvel Knights imprint, for the insightful social commentary. I would like to see Mr. ‘lok fight a tank. Agree or disagree?

Honorable Mentions

In the last two weeks Captain America, well, Steve Rogers, has made three appearances. Once in some kind of black ops get-up and then twice this week in his original uniform. There are still two issues left in Captain America Reborn. He hasnt’ even finished reborning! Thanks Marvel. This first shot was the final page of the New Avengers Annual #3. That second panel is from Iron Man #21 where all of Tony’s boys get the band back together to bring him back from being a vegetable.
New Avengers Annual #3 - Captain U.S. of A.

Iron Man #21 - Cap. Uh huh.

Top Cow has this series called Pilot Season. It’s where creators get a series of one-shots to try out brand new ideas and characters. At the end of the run the readers get to choose which idea will become an ongoing title. In this season the first comic was Murderer. He’s basically Bruce Willis from Unbreakable. But he uses a jacket full of awesome to kill people. Here the underrated brass knuckle.
Murderer #1 - Brass balls... er knuckles.

Ok, so Joey Q has gone on record as saying that Marvel comics will now cost $3.99. Four bucks for a comic. That’s very bold. Part of the justification of this price might be the inclusion of backup stories. Backup stories like the Savage She Hulk which has been showing up in issues of Hulk lately. I don’t care about backup stories. Make comics cheaper. This is Lyra. Hulk’s daughter from the future who works as a friggin time-cop. Who cares?
Hulk #605 - Savage She Hulk.
