From the Longbox – Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born

November 8th, 2009

When Roland the Gunslinger was a boy of only 14 he was sent on his first mission. This was very shortly after winning his Guns from his master Cort. Roland was the youngest to do so. Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born is the story of Roland Deschain before the events of the seven Dark Tower novels by Stephen King. If you never read the novels you won’t understand the comic. Hell, even if you did read the novels this series doesn’t make much sense.

The real star of this book is the artwork of Jae Lee along with Richard Isanove. Together these two artists created pages in these books that should be framed. I’ve picked up some of Lee’s work in the past. He did a run on Captain America that really left a bad taste in my mouth. His style does not translate well in the world of super heroes. However, in the world of the Dark Tower Lee really shines.

The Gunslinger Born is available at Amazon for anyone who is interested.

This is Roland as a grown Gunslinger:

Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born - All growsed up.

This is Roland as a young G.I.T. with his hawk, David:

Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born - That's not a hawk, this is a hawk.

Here Roland contemplates his guns sans shirt:

Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born - We don't need no stinking shirts.

Roland embraces Susan, his first and only true love:

Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born - Some sugar.

Susan came with some pretty serious emotional baggage:

Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born - Daddy. Issues.

This is what an antagonist looks like, the Crimson King:

Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born - Needs A1.
