From the Longbox – Daredevil: Yellow
November 23rd, 2009
Daredevil: Yellow is technically an origin story. For those who might not know, when Matt Murdock was first starting out as costumed vigilante he wore an outfit that was mostly yellow. And no, it was not because he was blind. He made his first costume out of his dead father’s old boxing robe.
Now I said this was technically an origin story because it doesn’t show how Matt got his powers. It deals mainly with the death of his father, avenging that death, and becoming the latest ‘mask’ in New York City. This story is the narrative of a letter that Daredevil drafts to the dead Karen Page. It’s been called a chick flick of a book with random action sequences thrown in to keep the cape fans happy. I disagree.
Jeph Loeb wrote this story well before he murdered the Ultimates figuratively and then the whole Ultimate universe literally. I thought it was a great read that gave useful insight into what makes Daredevil the man he is. Now, the real reason I love this book is for Tim Sale. Tim manages to draw square jaws and traditional hero knockout punches without coming off cheesy. It’s difficult to do anymore and every panel that ol’ Horn Head was swinging or punching or leaping was worthy of an entry on this blog.
Loeb and Sale collaborated on a pile of titles including Batman: The Long Halloween, Spider-Man: Blue
, and Hulk: Gray
.
Here’s some more love from Tim Sale in Daredevil: Yellow.
