Week of 10/4/09 – Captain America Reborn #4
November 5th, 2009
Gotta look close at this one. That is not a glimmer of hope in Cap’s eye. Those are Red Skulls. As in THE Red Skull. As in that vermillion visaged villain (hey, it is the fifth of November) has taken control of Cap’s newly reincarnated body! Seeing as how the name of the series has reborn in the title I don’t feel I’m really spoiling anything here.
When Cap died back in 2007 we all knew it was temporary. The interesting story was soon how will Marvel bring him back. Not how or why did he die. The answer, to my chagrin, was fuggin time travel. Steve Rogers wasn’t shot with a normal gun he was shot with a special Time Gun. This kind of fantasy belongs in a DC title doesn’t it?
However, it does allow Bryan Hitch to revisit all of Cap’s big moments as he fights his way back through time. Quantum Leap style. How writer Ed Brubaker doesn’t concede just one little “Oh Boy” moment, I don’t know. Bryan Hitch, for all the guff he takes for late issues, is still on point. At ease drawing huge splash pages of single characters (we’ll see some below) as well as giant battles featuring dozens of characters on a page.
Featured in this comic were splashes of Victor von Doom being a gracious host and a general ray of sunshine:

Cap returns from the time-stream and is deposited on a coke-heads dream coffee table:

Honorable Mentions:
Psylocke gets her own limited series and because she’s ninja she fights the Hand and whips up on them. Does the Hand ever beat anyone?

Phil Noto is doing the art for the new Iceman series. I’ll say it, a little pee came out I was so excited:

I love what David Lafuente is doing with Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. Look at this full page of the Hulk. Look at it!

People (me) say that Haunt is rip-off of Venom. It’s not fair. It’s not like he crawls walls or something. Oh wait:
